Balancing school and social media: A guide for teens and parents

Social media is a huge part of teenage life - a way to stay connected, share experiences, and express yourself. But with notifications popping up at all hours and the pressure to stay constantly connected, it’s easy for it to get in the way of school, sleep, and mental wellbeing.

For teenagers: How to stay in control of social media

1. Set screen time boundaries

Use app limits or your phone’s built-in tools to monitor how much time you're spending online. Try setting time windows - like no social media before school or after 9 p.m.

Top Tip: Keep your phone in another room while you revise or do homework - out of sight, out of mind.

2. Make school your priority

Your future self will thank you! Try this rule: school first, scrolling second. Use social media as a reward after you’ve hit your study goals for the day.

3. Unplug for mental health

If you find yourself comparing your life to what you see online, remember: most people only post the best bits! It's okay to take breaks - in fact, it's healthy.

4. Use social media smartly

Follow accounts that make you feel good and support your learning - there are loads of educational influencers, motivational creators, and study inspiration pages out there.

5. Protect your sleep

Sleep is vital for memory and mood. Aim to log off at least 30-60 minutes before bed. Try a relaxing bedtime routine instead of a scroll session.


For parents: Helping your teen find balance

1. Open the conversation

Instead of banning social media (which can lead to secrecy), talk to your teen about how it makes them feel and how to use it positively and in moderation.

2. Encourage routines

Support your child in creating a daily structure with time for homework, screen-free breaks, exercise, and rest. Help them set realistic, consistent boundaries.

3. Lead by example

Children and teens mirror what they see. Demonstrating a healthy relationship with your own phone and screen time speaks volumes.

4. Know what they're using

Stay informed about the platforms they use to help you understand. You’ll be better placed to offer guidance if needed.

5. Support digital downtime

Try screen-free family time - like walks, games nights, or meals together. It reinforces the idea that it's okay (and good!) to take a break from being online.


Social media isn’t the enemy - it’s a tool. But like all tools, it’s most powerful when used wisely. With balance, boundaries, and support from family, teens can enjoy the benefits of social media without it interfering with their studies or wellbeing.
