It is widely understood that learning styles can be categorised in 4 ways (the VARK model)

Auditory Learners: These learners absorb information effectively through auditory cues, such as listening to lectures, discussions, or verbal explanations.

Reading/Writing Learners: These learners prefer written information. They thrive when they can read texts, take notes, and engage in written activities.

Kinesthetic Learners: These learners thrive through hands-on experiences and physical activities. They learn by doing and engaging in tactile experiences.

Identifying Your Child's Learning Style

It is important to try and identify your child or student’s unique learning style. Tailoring learning activities according to your child's style increases their engagement and interest in the subject matter and can improve retention. It can also see them develop effective study habits that cater to their strengths, in turn boosting their confidence. You can do this by

• Observing how your child approaches tasks and communicates about their learning experiences. Do they prefer watching videos, listening to explanations, hands-on activities, or reading written instructions?

• Trial and error, encouraging your child to try different learning methods. Observe which techniques they respond to most positively and which ones help them retain information more effectively.

• Seeking feedback from teachers to gain insights into their learning preferences and behaviours in the classroom. Teachers can provide valuable observations regarding your child's engagement and learning style.

Supporting The Differet Learning Styles

Depending on which learning style your child identifies with, there are specific tools you can use to help them.

• Visual Learners: Provide visual aids such as infographics, diagrams, or educational videos. Use color-coding or highlight important information in their notes or textbooks.

• Auditory Learners: Encourage discussions, verbal explanations, or listening to audiobooks. Provide opportunities for verbal expression and engage in conversations about what they're learning.

• Reading/Writing Learners: Encourage reading books, taking notes, and engaging in writing activities. Provide ample reading materials and encourage them to summarize information in their own words.

• Kinesthetic Learners: Incorporate hands-on activities, experiments, or interactive learning tools. Allow them to move around while studying or use manipulatives for better understanding.
