Note-taking strategies that actually work (and the psychology behind them)
Taking notes seems simple: listen to the teacher, write down the important information, and look back over it later. But effective note-taking is much more than copying words from a board or filling pages in a notebook.
For students preparing for GCSEs, A-Levels or other exams, the way notes are created can have a significant impact on helping students remember or understand the material, and when it comes time to revise.
So why does note-taking matter?
Good notes can help students:

But writing down information does not automatically mean that information has been learned - this is why simply copying everything a teacher says is rarely the most effective approach.

So, what does effective note-taking actually look like?

1. Don't try to write down everything
Students don't want to miss anything important, however, copying information word-for-word can turn note-taking into a transcription exercise rather than a learning activity.
Instead, students should focus on:
Key ideas
Important definitions
Examples
Explanations
Connections between topics
Information they don't already understand
Instead of writing:
"Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants use light energy to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen."
A student might write:
Photosynthesis
Plants use light energy
CO₂ + water → glucose + oxygen
Takes place in chloroplasts
Chlorophyll absorbs light
The second version is shorter, but it gives the student a structure they can work with later.
2. Use the Cornell note-taking method
The Cornell method is one of the most established approaches to organising notes.
The page is divided into three sections:
Main Notes
The largest section is used during the lesson for recording key information.
E.g. The causes of the Industrial Revolution.
Cue Column
A narrower section is used for questions, keywords or prompts.
E.g. Why did industrialisation begin in Britain?
Summary
A small section at the bottom is used to summarise the topic in the student's own words.
E.g. Britain had a combination of natural resources, investment, technological development and favourable economic conditions that supported industrialisation.
The important part is that students aren't simply creating notes, they're creating questions they can later use to test themselves.
3. Turn headings into questions
This is particularly useful for GCSE and A-Level students.
Instead of writing “Causes of the First World War” try “What caused the First World War?” Then structure the notes underneath.
Later, the heading becomes a retrieval practice question. You can cover the notes and try to answer the question, which is much more useful than simply rereading the heading.
Retrieval practice involves actively trying to recall information from memory rather than simply looking at it.
For example, passive revision is reading your notes about the causes of the First World War. Active revision is closing the notes and writing down everything you can remember about the causes.
The second approach requires the brain to retrieve information and makes your notes much more useful if they have been structured around questions and prompts.
A simple routine:
Learn → close notes → recall → check → correct → repeat
The notes are therefore not the end of the learning process.
They're the starting point for active revision.
4. Use diagrams when they actually help
Not everything needs to be written as paragraphs - some concepts are easier to understand visually. Diagrams can be particularly useful for:
Biology processes
Geography cycles
Physics concepts
Historical timelines
Mathematical relationships
Complex systems
For example, instead of writing several paragraphs explaining the water cycle, a student could create a diagram showing:
Evaporation → Condensation → Precipitation → Collection
Then add short explanations alongside each stage. This can make relationships between ideas easier to see.
5. Don't overdo the highlighting!
Colour can be useful, but if everything is highlighted, nothing is highlighted.
Instead, give colours specific purposes.

One colour: key definitions
One colour: examples
One colour: important dates or statistics
The purpose of colour should be to make information easier to find - not simply make the page look attractive.
6. Try the Feynman Technique
The Feynman Technique is based on a deceptively simple idea - if you can't explain something simply, you may not understand it as well as you think.
After taking notes, close the book and explain the topic as though you were teaching it to someone who knows nothing about it.
For example:
"Photosynthesis is basically how plants make their own food. They use light energy to turn water and carbon dioxide into glucose, and oxygen is produced as a by-product."
If you get stuck, that's useful information - it tells you exactly where your understanding needs work so you can then return to your notes and fill the gap.
7. Make connections between topics
Excellent notes show relationships between ideas and topics, they don't just record isolated facts.
For example, in History, a student might connect:
Economic problems → political dissatisfaction → social unrest → political change
In Biology:
DNA → genes → proteins → characteristics
In Geography:
Climate change → changing precipitation → water availability → impacts on communities
When writing your notes, ask yourself - "How does this connect to something I've already learned?"
Making these connections can help students build a more organised mental model of a subject.
8. Don't spend hours making notes look perfect
This is particularly important for students who enjoy stationery, colour coding and elaborate layouts.
There is nothing wrong with making notes visually appealing, but presentation should support learning, not replace it.
If a student spends 45 minutes carefully rewriting one page of notes without testing themselves afterwards, they may have created something beautiful without necessarily learning much.
9. Review notes before you forget them
There is little benefit in taking excellent notes if they are never revisited. Memory naturally becomes less accessible when information isn't used, so rather than waiting until the night before an exam, students should revisit material periodically.
A simple approach might be:
Day 1: Learn the material
Day 2–3: Quick retrieval practice
One week later: Test yourself again
Several weeks later: Revisit the topic
This is known as spaced practice or spaced repetition, and it is a much more effective approach to long-term learning than leaving everything until the final few days.

Should I use digital notes or handwritten notes?
There isn't one universal answer.
Handwritten notes may be useful when students want to:
Draw diagrams
Annotate quickly
Sketch ideas
Work through mathematical problems
Digital notes can be useful for:

Organising large amounts of material
Adding links and resources
Accessing notes across devices
The most important question is "Which method helps me process, remember and use the information?" Students should choose the format that supports their learning rather than following trends.
